The Ha Noi Student Association held its fifth congress yesterday to work out tasks for 2008-13.

The association stated its aims to build a generation of adept students, able to support the country’s drive towards industrialisation, modernisation and international integration.

The association outlined five major tasks.

They include: diversification of activities; improvement of staff skills; review of training models; education on traditional culture; and student support – particularly in the areas of finding jobs and accommodation.

Deputy Secretary of Ha Noi’s Party Committee, Tuong Phi Chien, said the committee and the authorities had confidence in students.

In the next period, the association will implement a campaign to build a new generation of skilled students.

Six ambitious programmes focusing on study methods, life skills and health improvement will be delivered by the association.

The programmes will also ensure 100 per cent participation of the Student Association in voluntary campaigns, such as the campaign to help over 1,000 households to escape poverty.

Five idea-sharing seminars were organised at Ha Noi’s universities as part of the congress.

The association’s executive committee for the 2008-2013 period has 41 members. Ngo Duy Hieu was voted association chairman.

Over VND7 billion (US$412,000) was given in grants for 21,000 students, and 19,640 students were presented with awards for scientific research.

Voluntary campaigns like fundraisers for natural calamity victims were held at the congress by delegations of Ha Noi’s most outstanding students.

Ha Noi has over 45,000 students.
